Solar Energy for Women Empowerment

The aim of the project implemented by Humana People to People India, HPPI, is to provide solar lanterns to help women in the large project, “Computer-based Functional Literacy Program”, learn to read, write and do basic math. The training is conducted by volunteers, most of them women between 20 and 35 years old, who have 10 years of schooling. Since the start at the end of 2017, 100,736 women were trained in the three months basic literacy course.

133 solar lanterns were given to the volunteers in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana, thus helping them being able to teach in the evenings. The solar lanterns have been very useful in the project. Apart from lightening the study centers, lanterns have been used by women to reach back home after completing the evening sessions. The lanterns will overall have long-term impact on the lives and overall development of the women and their families.

The project will also spread the usefulness and viability of solar applications, which can be used by HPPI to get further funding to promote solar energy across India.
